Broadside
AGENCY:
Holdens' Agency
Broadside is a private rented scheme in the New Cross area of Manchester. The new luxury apartments needed an identity that differentiated them from the mass of new developments, and positioned the lesser known neighbourhood as a bustling part of Manchester city centre.
Concept
During the eighteenth and nineteenth century the area was home to a thriving hub of printers, responsible for the production of Penny Broadsides.
The Penny Broadsides gave the local community access to daily news, presented in a song or rhyme, and as the name suggests, cost just a penny.
This idea of telling real stories of real people formed the basis of the brand identity, allowing Broadside to connect with locals, new and existing, to form an exciting new community.
Brand Identity
The Brand mark pays homage to the old Broadside headlines—bold, confident and eye-catching, and the tone of voice is light-hearted and friendly, with key messages written in rhyme.
A suite of face illustrations make residents feel right at home, and this is complimented with bright, warm colours and layered imagery that is inspired by pasted up news prints.
The photography heroes the locals, from the neighbourhood dog walker, to the local independent shop owners—telling their stories through interviews documented on social media in ‘good news’ features.
Website
The website is designed to showcase the luxury residential scheme, whilst building a feeling of a lively community through fun details and subtle animations—giving the site movement, as users are able to explore the apartments, the neighbourhood and the Broadside community.
